Summer trip to the Red Sea, Sharm el Sheikh CONIDAE
[ENGLISH & FRENCH] [PDF]

Introduction

I wanted to thank Loïc Potier for thinking of me during his last trip to the Red Sea (Darioconus minusculus (auricomus?) à Hurghada, Mer Rouge, XENOPHORA n°183). I fulfilled my desire to discover Cylinder neovicarius (da Motta, 1982) in 2023. I wanted to point out that the cone aff. auricomus he mentions is a young Darioconus bratcherae (Petuch & Berschauer, 2019), whose silhouette is quite elongated at this stage of development. We went for ten days as a family to visit the Red Sea in July 2023 in the seaside city of Sharm el Sheikh. Our first contact with Egypt dates back to 2022, when my wife and I spent three days in Hurghada (Touitou, 2022). During the summer the temperatures are very high but our departure during the heat of July allows us to acclimatize rather quickly. The hotel we stayed in the previous year offered a lot of activities and tours. We therefore decided to choose the activities directly on site according to our desires. Serious error. This time, no activities are offered. So we have to figure things out for ourselves and nothing is easy, believe me. Fortunately, the modern era gives us search possibilities using our phones! We will manage to organize a quad tour in the nearby desert, two half-day private speed boat trips and a day in Cairo to visit the pyramids with our two children. This place is still so magical!
